Martin Estate

Purple Martin birds are native to Chicago and known for living in groups. We were tasked with designing a birdhouse that meets their needs.

This project was chosen to be installed along the South Loop Riverwalk in Spring 2023.

Prototyping, Sketching

The focus of the design on is based on the fact that they return to the same home. It’s common for people to add more houses to accommodate the growing flock.

Rough sketching was especially important for this project because it was hard explain our initial idea. Each unit is to be mounted on a pole to allow for rotation and easy addition/removal

Prototyping helped us solidify the final details.

There are 3 different sizes. The front face pulls out as a drawer for easy cleaning.

Ashwood and stainless steel handles are used as perch.
